Glycocalyx

Glycocalyx is a general term referring to extracellular polymeric material (protein and carbohydrate) produced by cells. The term was first used to describe the polysaccharide matrix excreted by epithelial cells and forming a coating on their surface. A pericellular coat of polysaccharides including hyaluronan, which surrounds the plasma membrane.
