Since the first transperitoneal laparoscopic partial nephrectomy performed in 1993 by McDougall et al. in a porcine model, significant advances in minimally invasive nephron-sparing techniques, along with development of new instrumentation, have led to the performance of safe and effective MIPN. It is established that MIPN has a shorter hospital stay compared to open. Long-term outcomes following MIPN are not yet available. The current trend using the robotic platform has expanded the role of MIPN to include more complex tumors.
